EXPLOSIVE revelations on national television about the extent of the ice scourge in regional Victoria have come as no surprise to local police.
On Monday night, ABC’s Four Corners exposed the devastating impact the drug is having on regional towns, with particular focus on the nearby communities of St Arnaud, Castlemaine and Ballarat.
It was revealed children as young as 11 are now injecting ice to escape the boredom of living in country towns and that major international drug cartels are working with bikie gangs to push ice out of the cities.
Detective Sergeant Steve Mitchell, head of Swan Hill’s Crime Investigation Unit, said while local police had not come across children as young as 11 using ice, the insidious drug had well and truly sank its claws in the region’s young adult population.
