In the ring for a good cause

SWAN Hill Boxing Club raised more than $3000 at the weekend when it held a sparring match for Chances for Children.

Organiser Daniel Uebergang said about 270 people turned up to support 14 boxers who battled it out in the ring on Sunday.

He said all money raised would go to Chances for Children, a locally-based charity committed to easing the burden of finances on children and young people.

Each of the boxers that took part on the day were trained by Uebergang, except for three-time AFL premiership player and current Nyah Nyah West United star Darryl White, who also stepped into the ring for a bout.

“We were hoping for a couple of hundred and more than that turned up,” Uebergang said.

“There was lots of interest and it ran smoothly. There’s talk of doing it again this time next year.”

A boxing glove signed by Lionel Rose and former boxer Barry Michael was auctioned off and won by Brad O’Brien.

Chris Taylor won the chin up competition with a total of 34 chin ups, taking home a prize of $100. Swan Hill Boxing Club runs mixed classes every Monday and Wednesday at 7pm and ladies-only classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
