Stations for sale

THE old Swan Hill and Nyah West police stations are among dozens of unused state assets set to go up for sale across Victoria, according to a new government website.

Making good on an election promise to disclose what public land it has sold or intends to sell, the Department of Treasury launched the land sales website this week.

It shows a park reserve on Beveridge Street is among properties that have already sold, boosting state government coffers by $1.6 million.

Along with the local former police station sites, 33 assets are on the block across the state including former schools, a hospital and government depots.

Assistant Treasurer Gordon Rich-Phillips said the surplus sites had sat dormant for many years and it was important they were put back on the market to be turned into new developments.

“Proceeds of the government’s highly successful land sales program are reinvested back into important new infrastructure such as schools, roads, public transport and hospitals, while the subsequent redevelopment of sites by the new owners has wide-reaching benefits for communities,” he said.

He said government land became surplus when it no longer contributed to a department or agencies’ current or future service delivery requirements.

Once declared surplus, it was offered for sale to all other government departments and agencies first before being listed for public sale.
