Uplifting repairs

THE bridge over the Murray River between Swan Hill and Murray Downs underwent repairs on Wednesday following a collision involving a wide-load heavy vehicle earlier this year.

In March, a wide-load hit the lift span towers, shifting the steel wire ropes and counterweights which move the lift span up and down.

Wednesday morning’s work and tests to the lift span stopped traffic, with the bridge raised during the works and a paddle steamer passing through early in the morning.

A spokesperson for Roads and Maritime Services said the incident did not cause safety concerns.

“Repairs are being carried out to the Swan Hill Bridge after it was damaged in March when a heavy vehicle with a wide load collided with the lift span tower,” the spokesperson said.

“There were no safety issues caused by the incident.

“While there was only minor damage, some components unrelated to the structural integrity of the bridge were repositioned.

“The bridge will be monitored to ensure there are no further issues related to this incident.”
