Eight qualify

EIGHT students from St Mary’s Primary School Swan Hill will compete in the schools’ cross country finals in Melbourne next month.

The students have been in cross country training since early May, with initial preparation undertaken in physical education and subsequent training done at lunch time.

Maddie Nelson (10-year-old girls), Max Dow and Dustin Burns (10-year-old boys), Harliai Curthoys-Davies and Greta Sheldrick (11-year-old girls), Sophie Triplett, Meg Pumpa and Eve Crowe (12/13-year-old girls) will all be competing for glory at the July 17 event at Bundoora.

Pumpa and Dow will be among those with strong form coming into the event, having finished first and second at their respective regional finals at St Arnaud in recent weeks.

School PE coordinator Xavier Kennedy said the finalists had worked hard to earn the right to compete at the state titles.

“The students that have qualified have put in a lot of training to give themselves the best chance to perform against the best in the state,” he said.

“Having that exposure to test yourselves against the best is a really good achievement.”
