Close competition for A grade

NO CENTRAL Murray netball team has experienced the gamut of emotions generated by the narrow margin between victory and defeat quite like Nyah Nyah West United.

The Demons opened their season with a one-goal loss to Tooleybuc Manangatang, but went from heartbroken to heartbreakers thanks to a one-goal win of their own over the Mallee Eagles at Lalbert.

The 34-33 triumph moves NNW United to sixth spot on the ladder and came on the back of a 19-goal haul from goal shooter Denise Snyder, who was named as the Demons’ best player.

Georgie Kelly impressed at goal attack, scoring 15 goals, while Eagles’ shooter Emelia Bett (19 goals) was a standout for the home side.

In a sign of how close the A grade competition is in 2014, just two sides remain unbeaten following the opening two rounds of the season.

Swan Hill took the show on the road, downing Tooleybuc Manangatang 49-34 at Tooleybuc.

But the Swans relinquished top-spot on percentage after Woorinen scored a resounding 62-19 victory against Koondrook Barham.

Tigers shooter Tayla Stanley nailed an impressive 52 goals, while goal defence Jaya Blandthorn was named her side’s best player.

Defender Lisa Radley and Kate Azzopardi battled hard for the Raiders.

In the round’s other match, Kerang kick-started their 2014 campaign with a hard-fought 50-37 success against Lake Boga.

The Blues had the bye in Round 1, but showed no signs of sluggishness during a 15-4 opening term against the Magpies.

Goal attack Katelyn Wright starred, scoring a game-high 26 goals, while her attacking partner Chloe Adams finished with 24.

Stephanie Kennedy was among the leading players for the home side.
