Hobson’s double an Easter treat

NATHAN Hobson fared best of Swan Hill’s trainers with a double on Easter Saturday at Kerang.

Hobson’s three-year-old colt Alpha Auriga was victorious in the 1100m race two, while the local trainer also enjoyed success with five-year-old gelding Kingdom Of War in the fifth race.

Roger Booth had both rides for Hobson.

Austy Coffey’s day also proved a success, with three-year-old filly Walkingintheair being steered to victory by Jacob Rule in the 1400m race four.

For Coffey, the winner kick-started what was to become his family’s “greatest ever Easter”.

“It was probably the best Easter we’ve ever had I reckon. It was great,” he said.

Austy’s son Harry rode a double for Darren Weir on Monday at Caulfield, as well as a double at Donald on Sunday for his dad.

He rode in Melbourne on Easter Saturday.

Results at Donald were especially exciting for Coffey senior.

“It was my first double at Donald. I grew up in Birchip which is next door, so to be so close to our home town and for Harry to ride a double for me was good,” he said.

Coffey headed to Oakbank on Easter Monday where he was less successful, with the father and son duo heading to Echuca yesterday.

Harry will ride in Bendigo today before heading back to Melbourne on Friday and Saturday to ride.

His dad will have five runners in the races in Swan Hill on Friday.
