Finals previewed in final round

THE final home and away matches of the Swan Hill pennant tennis season featured next week’s finals previews and the battle for the wooden spoon.

Campbell versus Splatt was the battle of the cellar dwellers.

With only three wins for the season Campbell finally looked to have a good team on paper.

In the men’s set Tim Croft and Jack McCaig combined for a great win over the highly fancied Colin Mitchell and Darren Barnes.

And when Brett Pekin and Tacka McKissack defeated Barry Dow and Dave Jonkers, Splatt was off to a flyer.

With Campbell down and out it was veterans Rick Austerberry and Andrew Sartori calming the farm with a quick 8-1 victory over Colin Free and Daniel Hughes.

Darren Barnes and Jordan Ting doing their bit against pint sized pair of Jack McCaig and Jonah Devlin, relieved to close out the youngsters 8-3.

In the women’s doubles Splatt’s Karen McKissack and Lisa Pekin started well, defeating Louisa Frost and Sophie Sartori 8-3.

But in an upset Andrea Mays and Rachel Evans were defeated by Kelli Frost and Bridie Gardner.

Splatt got the wobbles losing the remaining women’s sets.

In the mixed things got ugly with Colin Mitchell and Louisa Frost handing out a love set to Tim Croft and Andrea Mays. All the other sets went Campbell’s way getting them home by 51 games.

Beveridge and Stradbroke was the final match for these sides, both unable to make the finals.

Stradbroke was too good on the day, getting home by 17 games.

Top side McCrae drew on games with fourth placed Curlewis.

Gray and McCallum met in the other semi-final preview, with Gray winning by 24 games.
