Hare-raising goanna

THE fabled story of the tortoise and the hare is well
known.

But for Tyntynder resident Bev McDonald, it was a case of the greedy
goanna and hapless hare recently.

It was Thursday, January 9, when Bev heard
a commotion in her backyard.

“The minor birds were going mad, and I could
hear a screaming noise,” she said.

“A goanna had caught a half-grown hare
outside my back door.”

Bev said the goanna had the hare by the back leg and
was attempting to drag it away.

“The leg was only held by the shin by this
time, the goanna didn’t want to let go,” she said.

“But he did, and ran up a
tree by my tank stand.”Bev said the goanna stayed in the tree and kept an
eye on things, searching for his escaped prey, while she did some chores in the
backyard.

Bev said she went back
inside but “it wasn’t long when I heard the hare screaming again”.

“I grabbed
my camera and went out — the goanna had the hare around the ribs and was
climbing up another tree,” she said. “The hare was struggling and it made it
hard for the goanna.”

Bev said she watched until the goanna and its captive climbed
out of sight up the tall tree.
