THE Swan Hill township and region was thrown into darkness after Monday night’s high winds caused power shortages and blackouts across north western Victoria.
At 4.30pm yesterday, Powercor Australia confirmed 85 homes in Swan Hill were still without power supply due to the fierce storm.
Emergency services were called out to homes and streets where damaged power lines had interrupted the electricity supply.
At least four power lines had fallen or were damaged, as the SES and CFA battled to resolve potentially disastrous situations and restore safety.
Powercor Australia media spokesman Gordan Dadham said Swan Hill was the first town to be hit by the storm, which he described as particularly severe.
“It was a major weather event without doubt,” Mr Dadham said.
