Accolade for promoting wellbeing

BALRANALD’S Bidgee Haven Retirement Hostel has set the bar for exceptional aged
care services even higher after it took out a major award at the PLAC awards on
Monday night.

Held in Sydney, the Positive Living in Aged Care (PLAC) Awards
aim to promote good mental health in aged care and raise awareness in the
community.

Bidgee Haven Retirement Hostel took out the top award for their
interactive outdoor space “Saltbush Yarns” in the promotion of mental health and
wellbeing of residents with special needs.

The award recognises their work to
implement initiatives to reduce the risk “of the development of symptoms of a
mental health condition”.

The award also comes with a prize of $10,000 to be
used towards an initiative at the hostel.

Bidgee Haven Retirement Hostel
co-ordinator Gen McConnel said the staff and residents at the hostel were
“thrilled” with the recognition.

“I think it’s going to benefit all of the
residents and staff, not just the [residents] in the target area.”

She said
the prize money would be used to develop a new outdoor kitchen with a covered
roof and electric barbecue which would further benefit residents at the
hostel.
