Murrabit prevails at Wandella

IN ARGUABLY the wettest conditions for country football seen in at least three seasons, Murrabit prevailed in a low-scoring GRFL encounter at Wandella on Saturday by just three points.

The Blues even produced a final tally of 17 scoring shots to nine — twice as many as their Bomber opponents, but could only sneak home by the barest of margins.

It had been a close-run thing all afternoon. Wandella led by three points at quarter-time, having kicked the only goal of the opening 20 minutes while Murrabit managed four minor scores.

Only two more majors were put on the board to half time, one for each club, leaving the locals in front by a solitary point.

Then the tide — both literally and perhaps figuratively — turned in the Blues’ direction, as the incredibly heavy downpour intensified.

Murrabit continued to miss chances to convert forward 50 entries into goals but it didn’t matter.

Any addition to the scoreboard would be welcomed on a day like Saturday, and 1.1 (7) for a quarter’s work was enough to tie it all up at 22 points apiece before the final stanza.

But it was to be a resurgent Murrabit grinding out a valuable win ahead of the Queen’s Birthday weekend off.
