New Shoebox show

SWAN Hill’s smallest and most mobile gallery is now showing at Swan Hill Dental Clinic.

“Packed” is the latest exhibition to fill The Shoebox Gallery from Swan Hill-based artist Shirley Pinchen.

About the size of a shoebox and covered in glass, the gallery shifts around Swan Hill businesses and hosts different artists’ work for weeks at a time.

Ms Pinchen has filled the space with a bed of polystyrene blocks, continuing the artist’s fascination with discarded materials.

“[The artwork is] about stuff, how we accumulate stuff, and pack it into our lives… it’s a little bit tongue-in-cheek,” she said.

The Fine Arts graduate has previously worked in paint and printing, but more recently turned her hand to sculptural installations.

She most recently exhibited in the Go North Arts Festival’s ‘Hidden’ exhibition — where about 12 local stores hosted hidden artworks — choosing a local clothing store’s changeroom as her venue.

“I think the shoebox is a great little project, it’s good that people are using it as something different to put their art in,” Ms Pinchen said.

“I really enjoy art found in unusual places because a lot of people don’t have time to get into a gallery.”
