AFTER much contention, Koraleigh’s road with no name will be open to public comment.
The discovery of the nameless street last year by the Victorian Electoral Commision prompted Wakool Shire Council to act.
But a decision was put off until this week after some contention about who was most deserving of the street sign.
At this week’s monthly meeting council agreed to put forward three options to the public, deemed to be historically relevant to the Koraleigh area: Bungunyah, Chondrite and McKenzie Lane.
McKenzie Lane was the original proposal, until it was questioned by a councillor, wanting to recognise those with an association with the area that stretched back further than 10-20 years.
Residents rebuked at this suggestion, passionately defending the family’s contribution to the area in letters to The Guardian.
Mayor Andrew Douglas questioned whether the “kerfuffle” played out in local media had been helpful in finding a new name.
“So the kerfuffle in the paper didn’t bring anything forward…?” he said, to laughter from other councillors.
“The process now is we adopt two or three names, see what the public thinks, then come back and vote on one,” Cr Douglas said.
Formal advertisement of the three road names will take place through local media.
