Big changes for Balranald school

SIGNIFICANT additions to Balranald Central School’s 2013 curriculum are expected
to include the establishment of TAFE studies on campus and the development of
Indigenous language classes.

Balranald Central School principal Erich
Riesinger said the school would be running a metals and engineering course next
year, now that the school’s trade centre had been completed.

“That will
include a workshop for the community on Thursday nights,” he said.

“It just
means the community can start making use of the facility, so it’ll be the
closest thing to an adult training centre this town has got.

Mr Riesinger
said the course would be of great benefit to the entire Balranald community, but
especially for students who used to travel to Swan Hill to undertake vocational
studies.

In addition, Mr Riesinger said an Indigenous language class in 2013
was likely, with a specialist teacher from Hay showing “strong interest” in
taking on the role.

“My intention would be to open the subject up for
everyone at the school,” he said.

“I think it’s important that everyone has a
go — my kids ((studied an Indigenous language)) and they loved it.

“The
initial plan would be to introduce it into early primary studies because that’s
when kids are most willing to try new things.”
