Setts take out final

MILDURA Settlers proved too strong for Nyah District in Sunday’s Twenty20 regional final at Tooleybuc.

In warm conditions, the Settlers batted first, with quick bowler Mark Cleary opening the batting and registering 36 before being dismissed by Kent Wooding.

Cleary was the Setts’ top-scorer by the end of the innings.

Trent Thompson was the best of Nyah’s bowlers taking three wickets, while Jason Morrison and Michael Kadar took two each.

While the Settlers’ total of 142 might have appeared relatively modest to onlookers, Cleary was able to claim the scalps of Kent Wooding and Justin Toomey in the first over, meaning Nyah were behind the eight-ball from the start.

The Demons were eventually all out for 45, giving the Settlers a comfortable victory.

Nyah captain Jason Morrison said the Mildura side had made more of good conditions.

“It was a good batting deck and pretty good conditions, but they just played better than we did,” he said.

He said losing two wickets in the first over had proven hard to come back from.

“We were a bit behind right from the word go, but we weren’t able to pick up the pieces,” Morrison said.

Morrison said while he was disappointed Nyah couldn’t go further in the Twenty20 competition, it was a good thing to be involved in.

“We were disappointed not to go further but it is a pretty good competition, it’s good to see what else is out there in country areas, we’re not just watching our league,” he said.
