A NYAH West resident has taken the first step towards establishing an animal shelter in the Swan Hill region and has sought public support for the rest of the journey.
Gloria Rafaelle said she had enquired with the RSPCA and other animal rescue agencies, seeking a way to offer the unwanted animals of the region a second chance at life.
“After coming to the area from the Gold Coast I was appalled by the facilities and lack of information pertaining to the welfare and care of animals in Swan Hill and surrounding areas,” she said.
Currently, unwanted animals are taken to the Swan Hill pound, and if an owner cannot be found or a rescue service available, they are either shot or killed by lethal injection.
Swan Hill Rural City Council has recently enforced a 48 hour ‘cooling off’ period where no action is taken on surrendered animals at the pound.
