SENIOR residents will be celebrated later this year as part of the Victorian Seniors Festival, set to take place in October.
The statewide festival will be celebrated at a local level, and with preparations starting to take shape, Swan Hill Rural City Council is looking to collaborate with other local community groups who may be hosting an event to coincide with the festival.
Council community and cultural services director Bruce Myers said the council was seeking to partner with local community groups to recognise local seniors as part of the festivities.
He said the festival had “an emphasis on fun and good times”.
With events and activities taking place across Victoria, the focus will be on socialisation.
Social support leader Carolyn Harrop said she looked forward to the festival every year.
“It is a really fun way to celebrate the contribution that older people make to our community and give them some real opportunities to get together and socialise,” Ms Harrop said.
“We are currently in the process of preparing an impressive line-up of events in October, but we want to ensure that we are capturing events other local groups are planning.”
Ms Harrop said the festival would include a regional tour and special event at Swan Hill Town Hall.
Hoping to partner with other local groups who may be planning to host events as part of the festival, Ms Harrop encouraged all groups to share their events with the council.
“The emphasis is on offering opportunities for senior people to socialise – we want to encourage people to get out and continue to do the things that they love,” Ms Harrop said.
“Council would be delighted to partner with local groups and spread the message about activities and events available to our local seniors, this year.”
