Olive Spitty grabs eight-shot title lead

THE Murray Downs ladies’ championships started on Wednesday, with 12-year-old Olive Spitty firing a first-round of 76 to lead by eight shots from Paula Pickert. Olive is club champion at the Commonwealth Golf Club and was a member of its winning Division 1 pennant team last weekend. Unfortunately, defending champion Mary-Anne Davis, who has won 15 titles, was unable to compete.

In B grade, Marg Moore (91) leads Jill McIndoe and Jude Simmonds by two shots, while the C grade leader is Barb Cadd on 99, with Jenice Krahnert next best on 104. Lois Tippett has a commanding lead in D grade, her score of 103 putting her 13 shots clear of Deb Kelly.

The handicap sections are led by Paula Pickert (67), Marg Moore (72), Barb Cadd (71) and Lois Tippett (66).

The May Monthly medal was also on the agenda, with Lois Tippett (37) 66 winning from Paula Pickert (17) 67. These ladies were the D grade and A grade winners respectively, with the runner-up prizes in these grades going to Lynne Bishop (17) 73 and Deb Kelly (43) 73.

Marg Moore (19) 72 won in B grade from Dianne Plant (24) 73, while C grade winners were Barb Cadd (28) 71 and Marie Cruickshank 76 on a countback. Olive Spitty, Sue Davis and Jill McIndoe (all 73) led the ball pool. The putting comp was taken out by Maralyn Morrison with 28 and the NTP prizes were awarded to Lynne Bishop, Jude Simmonds, Olive Spitty and Sue Davis. Robyn Bett collected the balls in the birdies nest on the par-five 12th.

Jude Simmonds was the star on Saturday with a score of 68 net from her 20 handicap, with Val Hedwards (16) 72 net finishing runner-up. Kristy Gordon (73) led the ball pool with 73 and NTPs went to Jill McIndoe, Jenny Lynas and Jo Watts.LAKESIDE LADIES

A BIT of sunshine after a lot of rain has turned the Lakeside Golf Course into a grassy green course. Prizes were shared on Wednesday, with Deanne Free 106 (32) 74 taking home the Golfer of the Month towel. Jean Youl 100 (21) 79 finished runner-up on a countback from Mandy Ackland 102 (23) 79. Gobblers were taken by Teresa Matthews on the 14th and Joan Foster on the 18th.

NTPs were Jean for coffee and cake on the 3rd, Joan took home the Lake Boga Marines ball on the 7th, Mandy hit a nice drive down the middle for Shaw Auto Electricals NTP on the 12th and Deanne was closest, winning Joan’s ball on the 18th.
