Balranald citizens celebrated on Australia Day

BALRANALD and Euston residents, young and old, were celebrated for their contributions to the region this Australia Day and it was a great day for the Roos’ Netball Club.

The Balranald A grade team and the under-18s team were crowned the sporting teams of the year, while A grade playing coach, A Grade Best & Fairest as well as Voyage Fitness Netball Coach of the Year Jess Parry took home the sportsperson of the year. Parry’s side topped the ladder but were unable to compete in the grand final as COVID-19 reared its ugly head again.

Another successful Roo was Grace Morton, and the Central Murray Football Netball League under-16 best and fairest was awarded for her efforts with Balranald’s young sportsperson of the year award.

The big ticket award – citizen of the year – went to stalwart of the local arts scene, Jan Lawler.

Ms Lawler’s 40 years of dedication to the Balranald Arts community and Balranald Art Gallery were rewarded with the gong, much to the delight of locals who have witnessed her passion for the arts and education over the years.

Euston youngster Isla Taylor took home her town’s young citizen of the year award while Jackson Bialobrzeski from the Balranald Shire Youth Council team took home the equivalent award across the river.

Other award recipients included Peter Barrett, Col Jacka and Vic Pope who received a special achievement award presented by Balranald’s Australia Day ambassador Jay Allen for their continued work on the Southern Cross Exhibition.

Tom Lister won another special achievement award for his work as president of Robinvale Euston Rangers Cricket Club while Justin Griffiths’ work within the Balranald community was also rewarded.

Swimmer Matt Phajongdee took home the young sportsperson of year award for Euston while Carolyn Martinussen received the Robinvale Euston Business Association citizen of the year award.

The Homebush Recreation Club won the community event of the year award for their 2021 rodeo – and said they are keen for the upcoming 2022 event on April 23.
