Tooleybuc students celebrate NAIDOC Week at Pioneer Settlement

STUDENTS from Tooleybuc Central School made a special trip to Swan Hill to celebrate NAIDOC Week.

Events are held across the country each year to celebrate the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee, which this year ran from July 4 to 11.

On the last week of term two, Tooleybuc Central School visited Pioneer Settlement, where they took part in a range of activities, including a cultural talk and a bush tucker feast.

The students also learned to greet each other in the Wamba Wamba language, and discovered that common words, such as yabby and bunyip, come from this language.

The theme for NAIDOC Week this year was Heal Country!

The NAIDOC Week website says this means “embracing First Nations’ cultural knowledge and understanding of Country as part of Australia’s national heritage”.

The school has previously commemorated the day by holding a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony on the school grounds, and by participating in a range of special activities with guest dancers.

They also have learned about dot painting, as well as traditional food, and attended educational talks about the different lands, traditions and languages, as well as creating a mural at the school.
