Lafferty cleared fractures…lucky escape

Promising apprentice Laura Lafferty has been cleared of any fractures but is concussed and in the Swan Hill Health following a heavy fall in the last event on Golden Topaz day, the opening day of the June carnival on yesterday.

Lafferty took the fall when her mount Ronniejay broke down and ran through the running rail. She was scanned for any breaks to her shoulder and hip, but the Victorian Jockey’s Association confirmed to racing.com by text that she had been cleared.

The VJA message read: “The latest information from Swan Hill hospital in that Laura Lafferty is clear of any fractures. Concussed and soft tissue damage.”

The 22-year-old has made great strides this season and, with 56 winners, is placed 23rd in the Victorian jockey’s premiership.

She had a busy final two days of the carnival planned as she had five bookings for the Swan Hill Saturday meeting and six rides booked for Sunday’s Cup meeting.
