DEADPOOL and Wolverine in one movie? That alone should be enough to get butts in theatres.
Deadpool & Wolverine is the third movie in Marvel’s Deadpool series, and the billionth instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
But just because it has superheroes, doesn’t mean you can take your grandkids to the movies just yet.
As one of the most anticipated superhero movies in recent years, Deadpool & Wolverine has dethroned The Passion of the Christ as the highest-grossing American for an R-rated film, which equals the MA-15 rating in Australia.
The movie is more gory and foul-mouthed than the usual Marvel movie, earning its MA-15 rating.
Deadpool and Wolverine, played by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, follow the titular comic book characters.
The duo’s offscreen friendship translated well as onscreen chemistry, providing the audience with laughs and surprises.
Something about Reynolds in a Deadpool mask just feels right. Reynolds has mastered the sass and snark he brings to the character, and provides most of the movie’s comedic chops. You almost forget he played the Green Lantern.
While there’s no need to be caught up with everything in the MCU for audiences to have fun, some familiarity with the Avengers and X-Men is required to understand most of the gags, which is what takes up most of the movie.
It often felt like I was watching a series of gags rather than a movie with a plot as it revels in metaness with the fourth-wall breaking, winking and nudging at the audience in true Deadpool fashion.
But fans would argue that’s part of the Deadpool appeal.
Deadpool & Wolverine is unapologetically Marvel as much as it is unabashedly Deadpool.
Like other recent instalments in the MCU, the movie constantly reminds you that it’s part of the MCU, with gratuitous cameos, multiverse shenanigans, and references to many beloved characters among comic-book nerds as well as some who were not loved enough.
Ultimately the movie feels like a love letter to Marvel fans, which is why it can get away with all its “Marvelisms”, and still be entertaining to casual fans.
That’s why I’m rating Deadpool & Wolverine three out of five stars.
