Woorinen’s big gathering

WOORINEN district’s second Australia Day breakfast celebration brought more than 70 people together at the Woorinen South Community Hall.

The Woorinen and District Progress Association (WDPA) were all hands on deck running the morning, while the local CFA manned the barbecue.

With the traditional Australian breakfast staples on offer, neighbours, friends and family were treated to some snags, baked beans, fried eggs, toast and bacon.

SHARP fruits also provided the more healthy option of their home-grown fruits, while plenty of refreshments supplied.

But, WDPA secretary Lorri Lambert said while the flags and colours were on show, the celebrations meant a lot more about community identity.

“While we’re a small community, a lot of people don’t see each other in the town because they work elsewhere,” Ms Lambert said.

“There are a few faces here I haven’t even seen before, but that’s the best thing about these events — we say something is on and people turn out in numbers to help out.

“Last year’s inaugural event brought 70 people here and to have similar numbers again is pretty exciting as we try to build community connection.”

WDPA’s mission is to create a future for the district and are succeeding with numerous developments and events over the years.

“We do a couple of other events including Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea and a winter festival, while we’re planning something later in the year,” she said.

“Every Thursday at 2.30pm, we also have a cuppa at the hall for the community to find out what’s going on and what their worries are.

“Late last month, we also completed our hall veranda which we hope to utilise for future events over the years.”

While Woorinen did not have their own Australia Day award presentation, they were pleased “one of their own” in Yvonne Jennings was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in Lake Boga.
