Swan Hill Rural City Council says there are no plans to refurbish the McCallum Street toilet block, which a local volunteer said were “disgusting” and needed urgent attention.
The council’s chief executive, John McLinden, said the toilets were the most used within the city, with up to 90 visits per hour.
“Clearly they are the toilets located most centrally in town available to the public,” Mr McLinden said.
“I’m not aware of the visitation (numbers) to the comfort centre, but it certainly wouldn’t be anything like (the McCallum St) figures.”
Swan Hill Comfort Centre co-ordinator Beryl Lowe has called for the public toilet to be demolished, with investment made into the nearby comfort centre.
The comfort centre provides public amenities for a small donation, including showers, toilets and a baby change facility.
Ms Lowe said council needed to provide more attention to hygiene in the toilets, but Mr McLinden said continued vandalism within the facility just flushed ratepayers’ money down the drain.
