Drag strip dramas

Some of Swan Hill’s motorsport groups had “open and frank” discussions with council at a closed meeting last Wednesday night, as $500,000 repair works continued to rev up opinions.

Council invited representatives of user groups at Chisholm Reserve for the meeting, which The Guardian attempted to attend.

The Guardian observed council directors, at least three councillors, Mayor Les McPhee and chief executive John McLinden at the hour-long meeting.

“The purpose was to discuss the situation with the drag strip so that council could communicate directly to the user groups,” Mr McLinden said.

“It gave the user groups the opportunity to discuss, in an open way, their views on the matter.

“The decision that led us to be in this position was discussed in a pretty frank manner,” he said.

Mr McLinden declined to comment on public calls for an apology to ratepayers.

“Council has accepted responsibility for repairs to the track,” he said.
