Swan Hill students shine in VCE results

Monday marked the big day of reveal for 49,765 VCE students across the state with the 2016 ATAR rankings finally released, and local students impressed with their high scores.

Swan Hill College’s Dux James Schifferle achieved an ATAR of 91.20 while St Mary MacKillop College’s Dux was William Barkman who achieved 98.75.

Mr Barkman follows in the footsteps of older brother Chris, who was dux in 2014 with an ATAR of 93.8.

“Relief was the main emotion I was feeling this morning,” Mr Barkman said.

“I was expecting to get in the nineties but I didn’t think I’d get as high a score as I did.”

He was one of the 2,000 VCE students who received their ATARs via text message a week early due to a glitch in the VTAC system.

“At first I thought it was a hoax so I deleted the text message. It was a bit of a shock,” he said.

“I know a few other kids at my school who got their results early.”

Mr Barkman said he is hoping to go to university next year to study veterinary science.

“There are quite a few places I have applied for all over the country,” he said.

“Melbourne University is the only school in Victoria who offers the course so I’m willing to move interstate if I need to.”
