Swan Hill police will now be able to respond to priority one calls sooner after a police only access roadway that cuts through the median strip at the front of the station on Murray Valley Highway was upgraded last week.
Acting Superintendent Western Region Division Six Dan Davison said the poor condition of the access lane made it unsuitable for vehicles.
This forced police vehicles to perform a nearby U-turn to respond to incidents within the vicinity of the Swan Hill CBD.
“It was previously sand and, at one stage, rubber matting was laid to provide grip for tyres but it was often getting caught up in the wheels,”
The lane was paved with concrete last week in a joint funding initiative between Victoria Police, VicRoads and Swan Hill Rural City Council.
Acting Supt. Davison said it was a strong outcome between the stakeholders.
“We would like to remind motorists that it’s not a U-turn access point for vehicles other than police,” he said.
