Swan Hill police have welcomed a State Government plan to curb Victoria’s rising road toll that will see police officers take on more shifts to scan driver behaviour.
A meeting of the government’s ministerial council into road safety last week approved 1000 new police shifts between now and Christmas to target dangerous driving behaviours, including mobile phone use, speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol.
The announcement comes after a motorist was killed in a car crash at Pental Island on August 26.
The government announced the immediate new road safety measures in response to the state’s worst start to the year for road fatalities since 2008.
