Elders keen for celebration

SWAN HILL Aboriginal Elders Aunty Stephanie Charles and Aunty Nola Baxter are excited about upcoming NAIDOC Week.

Speaking from the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) plaque unveiling ceremony on Wednesday, both said that NAIDOC Week remained an important part of retaining their cultural history.

“It’s a time to share our culture and traditions,” Aunty Stephanie said.

“In past times it has fallen to the wayside, but we live our culture everyday and it is a great chance for us to share it with the wider community.”

Aunty Stephanie welcomed businesses and the community to help celebrate by joining in NAIDOC Week activities.

Aunty Nola said it was an important celebration of past ancestors and provided an opportunity for the community to come together.

“It’s a good time to be proud of who you are,” she said.
