Road tragedy

THE Swan Hill community is reeling following the death of a local couple in a car crash on a highway at Daylesford, north-west of Melbourne, on Saturday morning.

Jo and Michael Glare were killed when their Holden Commodore collided with a tree just before 8am.

Police said the couple were approaching Daylesford from the north along the Midland Highway when the car left the road, narrowly avoiding an oncoming car before hitting the tree.

Mrs Glare, 39, the driver, and her husband, 41, died at the scene, while their 18-year-old daughter Rhiannon was taken to Ballarat Base Hospital with minor injuries.

Police believe transparent black ice on the road contributed to the collision. No other cars were involved.

Ms Glare’s Facebook page has been flooded with tributes and messages of condolence, with the couple well-known in the Swan Hill district community.

Swan Hill Darts League’s Dawn Webb said the couple had been playing darts for the past 25 years and together had volunteered in several roles in the league’s committee, including contest director, secretary and treasurer.

Ms Webb said the whole Glare family was involved in the darts league and that the couple was taking their daughter to the Under 25 Darts Championships in Melton when the crash occurred.

“We will really miss them a heck of a lot,” Ms Webb said.
