MORE than 20 volunteers were out and about in the Nyah-Vinifera Park this month learning how to survey species as part of a recovery program.
On June 5, the volunteers were in the forest getting skilled up in plant and weed identification, flora and fauna surveying and cultural sensitivity in the park.
The Friends of the Earth river country campaign jointly received a State Government grant with the Friends of Nyah-Vinifera Forest and the Wadi Wadi traditional owners to protect threatened plants and species through education and weed control.
Campaign coordinator Morgana Russell said support had been good from volunteers but urged forest visitors to take more care of the park.
“Unfortunately a site we went to revisit and monitor had been significantly disturbed by four wheel drive tracks ripping it up,” she said.
“It is vital to stick to marked roads in the forest, as the ground is precious for habitat and you could be driving over a cultural site or animal habitat, not to mention creating erosion and spreading weeds.”
