Kelly’s chipper return to the playing field

THE reigning Jack Betts medallist has made his return from a knee injury for the Saints, booting four majors and getting back to what he does best.

After admitting he had been feeling down about the whole experience, Nyaburu Kelly was optimistic about his season and how his Tooleybuc Manangatang side would fare for the remainder of the year.

The livewire was first sidelined in round 2, during an important match with Kerang, when he tore the patella in his knee.

He had finished rehabilitation and was finally cleared to play — only to have his comeback snatched away from him.

“After my first injury, I had a work incident to my other knee so that sat me out for another five weeks,” he told The Guardian.

“I was really unlucky. I was right to play again that week.”

The injury was the worst timing for Kelly, a player considered vital for the Saints’ flag tilt.

Kelly said he needed to stay around the playing group to keep his head in check.

“It has been a very frustrating time. I don’t know how to put it, I have been a bit down,” he admitted.

“I have been doing everything right to get back on the field. I have done enough and got myself back into the game at the weekend, coming away with only general soreness and I was rapt to get through it.

“I was just trying to keep my mind off of the injury and getting around the boys, showing them support and getting into the gym knowing I would be back this season and not early next year.”

Kelly played in the forward line for the Saints’ match with Cohuna Kangas on the weekend, booting four goals.
