THE popularity of the Swan Hill Hospital Op Shop is a phenomenon that has left many behind the till scratching their heads.
Over the past year, the op shop on the corner of McCrae and Beveridge streets recorded a record profit of $144,900, more than $20,000 greater than the previous year.
“My word it’s a lot of money,” Swan Hill District Ladies Auxiliary treasurer Shirley McQueen said.
The shop regularly takes more than $500 a day and the flow of donations is unfaltering, with three spacious storage rooms stacked high with crockery, books and the odd three-piece suit.
“If you didn’t have girls working here every day … you wouldn’t be able to get through the back door,” auxiliary secretary Wendy Rayment said.
Priding itself on clean, quality goods and a quick turnover, the op shop relies completely on volunteer power to pack and organise all donated items.
