MURRAY DOWNS MENS
ABOUT 30 players took the course for Tuesday’s medley Stableford competition, with Roger Walker taking out the A Grade competition with 37 points from his handicap of 16, and Noah Starrs finishing second with 34 points on a countback.
The best score of the day belonged to B Grade winner Tony Ford, who continued his red-hot form with 44 points from his handicap of 19 to beat runner-up Mitchell Uhlhorn with 38 points.
The nearest the pins were won by Paul Bethune (2nd), Damian Mangiameli (11th), while the eagles nest on the 7th went to Daniel Cruickshank.
On Thursday another medley Stableford event took place and numbers increased to 80 players.
The best score of the day belonged to A Grade winner Ken Gregory, who finished with 38 points to win on a countback ahead of John Tripodi, who also finished with 38 points.
Christy Merritt’s solid form continued after claiming B Grade honours with 36 points on a countback ahead of Tony Ford, while Harper Wilson took out the C Grade competition with 38 points from his handicap of 34, with Graeme Gidding finishing second with 35 points.
The nearest the pins went the way of Ray Power (2nd), Glen Palmer (5th), Gary Hughes (11th) and Dale Smith (15th), while the winner of the weekly 9-hole competition this week was Barry Ingram with 19 points.
On Saturday, the club held the July edition of our monthly medal competition, where the winner was Rob West with a fantastic score of net 67 from his handicap of 25.
Congratulations Rob on a fantastic score in what proved to be very tricky playing conditions.
Luke Rodgers also had a very solid round of golf to claim the A Grade competition, with his 69 net from his handicap of three good enough to get the job done by two strokes ahead of Mitchell Croft with a 71 net score.
The B Grade had to be decided on a countback, with James Beard’s net 74 score prevailing ahead of Ross Hendy and Barry Lacey, who both recorded a score of net 74.
Joseph Higgins round of net 71 was good enough for him to win the C Grade competition ahead of Rob Merrett with net 74, while the nearest the pins were won by Paul Bethune (2nd), Bailey Codling (5th), James Beards (11ht) and Luke Merritt (15th).
In conjunction with the monthly medal, we also held our Medal of Medallist competition, where all the winners of the monthly medal throughout the last calendar year competed for the best of the best.
Our Medal of Medallist winner for 2024 is Ross Hendy, who finished with a score of net 74.
Sunday marked our inaugural Swan Hill Truck Services sponsor day, the competition for the day being a four-person medley Ambrose event with more than 100 players entering.
The winners of the day, with a fantastic score of net 53.375, were Daniel Cruickshank, Mia, Lenny and Jon Hirst, while finishing in second, with a net 54.875 score, was Brad Cockfield, Daniel Delmenico, Oli Rohde and Carlee Hazlett.
Third went to Stuart Patterson, Freddy Patterson, Deborah Quin and Brenton Gurnett with a score of net 55.625, while the nearest the pins were won by Robert Hinton (2nd), Brad Cockfield (5th), Ken Gregory (11th) and Matthew Battenelly (15th).
MURRAY DOWNS LADIES
THE Mildura Health Fund sponsored a four-ball best-ball at the Murray Downs Golf & Country Club on Wednesday, competed by 29 pairs.
Deb Watson (42) and Sally Fearn (36) were victorious on the day with a score of 43 points and were closely followed by the pairings of Di Atkin and Pam Blohm, and Lisa Brady and Mandy McCallum, who both finished on 42 points.
Bev West and Jenice Krahnert finished fourth with 41 points on a countback ahead of Ruth McAlisrer and Laurel Dewhurst, while the nearest the pins were won by Michelle Holt, Lyn Merrett, Pam Austerberry and Sally Fearn.
On Saturday, Suzanne McLellan (25) scored a 71 net and Gaye Legudi (31) a 72 net to win Division 1 and 2 respectively. Runners-up prizes went to Margaret Moore (20) with a 73 net score and Kerry Gammon (35) with a 74 net, while Barb Cadd and Mandy McCallum led the ball pool.
LALBERT
ON Sunday, the Lalbert Golf Club held a Stableford event.
The winner was one of the club’s junior players in Caitlin McKissack, with a fine score of 37 points, ahead of Brian Curthoys on 36 points.
There were no nearest the pins awarded, while the club was also represented at the Murrabit golf tournament held over the weekend.
The Lalbert Golf Club annual tournament will be held on Friday, July 19, with a three-person any-combination Ambrose event, before concluding on Sunday, July 21, with an 18-hole stroke event.
Both days will begin with an 11.30am assembly for a noon tee-off, with a sausage sizzle beginning at 11am.
LAKESIDE LADIES
IT was a beautiful sunny day for Wednesday golf at Lakeside, with the winner of the Stableford event being Mandy Ackland (24) who scored 33 points, and the runner-up being Mandy Male (10) with 31 points.
The ball rundown was won by Joan Foster with 27 points and Jean Youl with 26 points, while the nearest the pins were won by Deanne Free (3rd), Joan Foster (7th), Mandy Male (12th) and Jean Youl (18th).
VETERANS
A VERY good turnout for our monthly Northern District Veterans Golf Association event, with the Lakeside Golf Club in great shape after some timely rain.
Twenty-nine members competed for both the ladies’ and men’s events, with the ladies’ winner being Jean Youl after scoring 38 points, in front of runner-up Marg Learmonth who scored 33 points, and the ball pool going to Mandy Male who finished with 28 points.
Two grades were played for the men, with the A Grade winner being John Manser with 36 points, on a countback from runner-up Rick Austerberry.
The B Grade winner was Ray Henshall, who scored 32 points and finished in front of runner-up Fred O’Bryan on 31 points.
The ball pool went to Dennis Pretty and Peter Roberts on 34 points each and Rob Male on 32 points, while the nearest the pins went to Jean Youl on the 3rd, 12th and 18th, Ian Dodd on the 3rd, Ray Power on the 7th, and John Manser on the 18th.
The recently activated pen award went to Kerry Gammon with 16 points for the ladies and Graeme Bray with 13 points for the men.
