Beef Bonanza: Exports drive up cattle prices

RECORD cattle prices of more than $3 per kilogram have put smiles on the faces of many of the region’s beef farmers.

Landmark livestock agent Jason Pickering said last Thursday’s cattle prices were the highest he had ever seen at Swan Hill, with grain fed steers in the 400kg to 600kg bracket topping the market at 317.6 cents per kilogram.

He said with the export market driving demand it was pushing prices up and he expected them to remain high for the foreseeable future.

“The upward trend will continue. Traditionally the winter months are the dearer months,” he said.

He said in recent years the prices of cattle had been fairly ordinary and that it was nice that farmers were now seeing some good prices.

“The industry talk is there’s still room to move.”
