Swan Hill shines at state competition

SWAN Hill shone at the state Little Aths in Melbourne last month.

Eight Swan Hill Little Aths Centre (SHLAC) athletes competed at the Little Aths Victorian State Track and Field Championships on March 29 and 30.

For one of those athletes it proved the path to national competition, with Emma Berg qualifying for the Australian junior track and field championships in May.

Berg competed in under 13 girls’ events, specialising in discus and shot put.

For the latter she was awarded gold with a best throw of 42.12m, while her 11.84m effort in the shot put won her a silver medal.

Her throw of 24.64m in the under 13 girls’ javelin earned her ninth spot.

Berg’s achievements saw her selected in the Victorian team to compete at the Australian Little Athletics National Track and Field Championship in Melbourne in May.

Other athletes also recorded great results, with Sarah Berg finishing 12th in the under 10s shot put with 6.67m and 15th in the under 10s discus with 17.62m.

Jacob Bull finished 13th in the under 14 boys’ 90m hurdles with 15.42s, 15th in the under 14s triple jump with 10.37m and 13th in the under 14s long jump with 4.96m.

Hannah Storer was 21st in the under 10 girls’ long jump with a distance of 3.47m and 22nd in the under 10s triple jump with 7.42m.

Isaiah Bull was 16th in the under 11 boys’ triple jump with a distance of 8.87m, 14th in the under 11s 100m with a time of 14.71 seconds and 15th in the high jump with 1.20m.

Shannon Fox came 19th in the under 13 girls’ 80m hurdles with 14.74 seconds; Sam Bull was 22nd in the under 10 boys’ shot put with a throw of 5.81m; Jackelyn Burge was 14th in the under 13 girls’ 300m hurdles with a time of 52.79s.

SHLAC’s Brooke Walker said the Swan Hill athletes showed “wonderful sportsmanship” throughout the competition.

“They also displayed fantastic team spirit in supporting each other across the weekend,” she said.

“This was a credit to our team managers Zac Bull, Elaine Bull, Michelle Berg and Jacky Storer.

“The SHLAC committee thanks them for their efforts over the weekend and for the coaches who have helped the athletes train over the past few months.

“We wish Emma the best of luck for the upcoming nationals in May.”
