Un-selfie way to raise money

A LOCAL hairdresser has thrown her support behind raising money for breast cancer, but in her own way.

Kylie Boxall, an active Facebook user, was caught in social media’s latest craze of ‘no make-up selfies’.

The ‘no make-up selfie’ was initiated to raise money for breast cancer research, with social media users being nominated to upload an image of themselves without make-up.

Participants are then meant to donate money to the Breast Cancer Foundation.

However, after noticing a significant number of images being uploaded, and not many donations, Ms Boxall decided to take action and do the deed “properly”.

“I kept getting nominated to upload a no make-up selfie and then just thought if I am going to do this, then I am going to do it properly,” she said.

With that thought in mind, Ms Boxall put her own spin on the initiative.

She decided that if she raised $150 in five days, she would work her full shift today at Sweeney Todd’s Hair Artistry wearing no make-up.

“In the whole 10 years that I have been a hairdresser, I have never gone to work with no make-up on,” she said.

“There is something always on my face. I just never leave the house with no make-up.”

Ms Boxall was overwhelmed with the amount of support she received and stoked to see that, in less than two days, her goal was almost tripled, with more than $400 raised.

“I didn’t expect to get that much at all, I thought a few would donate, but definitely not as many that did,” she said.

“People were just sending me screen shots of their donations and it all added up pretty quickly.”

Anyone that wants to donate to Ms Boxall’s fundraiser can go to www.mbcf.org.au or drop into Sweeney Todd’s, which has a donation jar set up.

Ms Boxall will also upload a no make-up selfie on Facebook.

“I’m scared I will scare the clients away,” she laughed.

Ms Boxall decided to take on the challenge because cancer had touched her family.

“I guess it is just a nice thing to do,” she said.
