Stock off track

STOCK owners with property neighbouring railway lines are being reminded to ensure their stock do not wander onto the tracks.

According to V/Line, a total of 164 collisions with animals occurred in 2013 — a 90 per cent increase on 2011, when 86 animals were hit.

The transport body has attributed the rise to increased numbers of kangaroos being killed on lines across the network.

The most casualties occurred between Ararat and Ballarat where 17 sheep were killed.

Along the Swan Hill line, seven sheep and one dog were among the animals hit by trains in 2013.
