THE COLLABORATIVE efforts of community members were celebrated on Friday in the
official opening of George Lay Park.
Ominous rain clouds did not deter those
in attendance from making the most of the recently erected facilities.
The
multi-faceted community playground and garden was inundated with school children
and teachers from local schools as well as representatives from Swan Hill Rural
Council and Swan Hill District Health.
Speakers at the official ceremony
included Swan Hill District mayor Les McPhee, Member for Swan Hill Peter Walsh,
Swan Hill Rural City Council community planning development officer Fiona
Gormann and Swan Hill College teacher Kylie Gardner.
In his speech Councillor
Les McPhee thanked those who were involved for their hard work, while Mr Walsh
commended the efforts of those individuals over the course of the project,
saying it would make the park a safer and more enjoyable place for
everyone.
“It’s been a journey for the community and it is a true community
park,” Mr Walsh said.
“I’ve heard people saying it’s the best project the
council has ever done, and I know the community appreciates it. It’s something
the community will cherish and I encourage people to continue to enjoy the
facilities.
“It’s a pleasure to share the opening with everyone.”
