SWAN Hill SES can now purchase more equipment thanks to a successful Swan Hill SES Raft and Duck Race which raised more than $6000 this week.
SES volunteers released 1400 yellow plastic ducks into the Murray River at Riverside Park on New Year’s Day with hopes they would float to the Swan Hill Bridge.
Duck number 1182 made Swan Hill resident Robert “Ollie” Monk’s day when it won him $1000 as it reached the bridge first ahead of 1399 others, about half of which did not finish.
The owners of the next five ducks to finish also received prizes, which were donated by local businesses.
However, more than half the ducks never made it to their final destination due to “very difficult conditions” according to Swan Hill SES controller Robert Merrett.
