MORE Swan Hill police are on the road this Christmas to combat the region’s rising levels of single vehicle collisions.
“As of December 30 (2011), we’ve had 15 more collisions than the previous year,” Swan Hill Police Sergeant Les McPhee said.
In 82 per cent of these collisions only one vehicle was involved, which highlighted the risks of fatigue and distraction, he said.
He also warned people to avoid becoming complacent as “local people are as much involved in those collisions” as tourists.
Swan Hill police are currently using the latest technology to curb this trend during the Victoria Police Summer Stay road enforcement campaign and warning drivers to stay safe or stay off the road.
Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), mobile and stationary radars, drug testing and random breath tests will all be used to decrease the major risks of speeding, driver distraction, fatigue and driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
