Tooleybuc Sporting Club visitors will enjoy dinner at a new bistro that opens on Wednesday night.
Whether it’s a stir-fry, or a classic parma, Tooleybuc Takeaway & Fusion will be bringing locals a tastes of east Asian food as well as familiar pub food.
Bistro owner Aaron Khong is confident that the half-Asian, half-western menu will attract a diverse range of people to the town.
“It’s not just local customers, but visitor and campers from out of town,” Mr Khong said.
“I also want to help the club and get more people walking in.”
Mr Khong also emphasised the importance of catering to diverse groups in the community.
“There are lots of Asians in Tooleybuc now, as well as people who are Muslim and currently fasting in the month of Ramadan,” he said.
“So we’ll have a few specials for Ramadan as well which are all halal.”
Mr Khong is originally from Malaysia and has plenty of experience as a chef in his home country and around the world as part of the YMCA.
He has helped set up kitchens for the YMCA in Brisbane, Singapore, Ching Mai in Thailand, Cambodia and Laos.
Although very different from the bustling city of Kuala Lumpur, Mr Khong is loving the small town of Tooleybuc.
“It’s a great town and all the people around here are great,” he said.
Mr Khong’s passion for cooking gave him the opportunity to cater for Moulamein Racing Club every year.
“It’s a big event, so I cook at home and deliver it to the races,” he said.
Mr Khong has lived in Tooleybuc for the last seven years.
“When I came to Australia from Kuala Lumpur, I started from zero in Tooleybuc,” he said.
“But one day the sporting club members came to me and said ‘Aaron, we need some good food down here’, so I thought I’d just give it a go.”
