Accommodation needed for Country Week Tennis

SWAN Hill Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club have put out a request to the public for additional housing, to support the accommodation of the increased number of entries for the Tennis Victoria Country Week, which will be from Sunday February 13 to Friday February 18 2022.

Motels and caravan parks have been booked out and there is a waiting list of potential players and teams being maintained by the Regional Information Centre.

The five day snap lockdown in February 2021 caused the cancellation of Country Week in Swan Hill, but the decision to return gives the community and the club the opportunity to deliver a bigger and better event in 2022.

With 178 teams already registered and an expected 200 plus teams, the event will deliver a welcomed social and sporting event to the community after a very challenging year.

“It would be great if people would make their houses or units available for rent during Country Week to assist with accommodation of teams and tournament personnel,” Christian Devlin, president of the Swan Hill Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club told The Guardian this week.

“The Rural City Council outdoor staff are working hard to prepare the soccer pitch, which will hold nearly 50 temporary courts and should function as well as our permanent courts.

“Swan Hill has a reputation for providing great courts all on one site, a great social calendar involving most of our hospitality venues, and a welcoming community.

“All we need for a very successful Country Week is more accommodation for players.”

Mr Devlin said if people wanted to support the event by offering their home or rooms for rent, they could contact the Swan Hill Regional Information Centre on 50323033 who would be happy to assist.

The upcoming summer season will see tennis take over the township, with the National Seniors Tournament being held in Swan Hill from January 9 to January 21 2022.

The tournament will see 800 players from across Australia play a state teams-based event, as well as, singles, doubles and mixed doubles for individuals.

Three weeks later the Tennis Victoria Country Week carnival will start.

“Our volunteers are amazing for their work and their willingness to host these events – I really can’t thank them enough,” Mr Devlin said.
