Moulamein notes: August 14, 2020

Just in the nick of time

OUR Moulamein district was blessed with a great rain event last week.

Most falls seemed to be around the 40mm.

Some above for those with long-legged dogs, and some just below.

All that seemed to be left alive in my dryland paddocks was the clover and medicks.

All I was hoping for was for them to put a few seeds out for next year.

They have responded very well to the lifesaving rain event. I think they will come back beautify and grow a power of feed and give us our seed bank back for many years to come.

The big news is what has happened up in our Murrumbidgee catchment. The Yass River has gone from 100 megalitres a day to over 31,500ML a day.

Our Burrinjuck Dam has gone up 20 per cent in three days. Ten per cent in the last 24 hours with over 101,000ML flowing into it in a single day.

The Murrumbidgee at Gundagai has gone from 3000ML a day to over 25,000.

This is below the weirs, so Jack’s off-quota he said that we would get is looking pretty promising.

Grease up your pumps, Bidgee pumpers.

Since writing the first bit, I have found out that off-quota is coming, a two-day event with a possibility of extension is on the way.

Translucent dams

I AM not quite sure what this means yet, but I do not think it can be very good for irrigators.

Over the past three days, over 200 gigalitres has run into Burrinjuck Dam on our Murrumbidgee River.

I just finished writing about how good a 20 per cent increase is, then I get an email about how they are going to let a large proportion of this very precious water go down the river.

For Christ sake, we have had little water the last few years now that we have final got some decent inflows, they want to let it go down the river because some bloody trigger of the Murrumbidgee Regulated River Water Sharing Plan has been reached.

The weirs were built by men in overalls with foresight. They seem like they will be made useless by people in suits with no idea.

Bowls tournament

OUR Moulamein Bowling Club has its September Classic Tournament coming up on September 19 and 20.

With not much happening on the sporting front, this would be a great time to polish up the old bowls and head to Moulamein.

There is plenty of accommodation available and a courtesy bus to pick you up and drop you off after the game.

With nothing happening in Victoria because of the dreaded COVID-19, we need all the NSW teams that we can muster to make this a great weekend.

I am in with a pretty rough team, but we intend to have a bit of a dip and win a few games.

It would be great for all our NSW sides to come to Moulamein and join us.

For more information, please ring our club on 5887 5207, or Kerryn on 0407 800 111.

Looking forward to seeing you there.
