Australia Day in Moulamein
IT all started at around 8am for breakfast cooked by our Moulamein Fire Brigade.
This was followed by the usual ceremonies and our gallery mob has was fortunate enough to pick up an award this year.
Our Moulamein Town Fire Brigade put up a collection bucket to help the family of our RFS members that lost their life fighting fires.
With the generosity of our Murray River Council that helped us run this event, all the money taken for the breakfast as well as the very generous donations was sent on to the family of the young bloke, Samuel McPaul, from Albury.
With just over $900 collected in the morning, our town brigade threw in a few bucks and we sent $1000 off from our town.
It gets even better, one of our local farmers never got to donate to our districts hay runs due to a technicality, so, they matched our donation dollar for dollar.
Thank you Kerri Kerri, $2000 to his wife that is expecting their first child.
We then had our usual lake carnival with a jumping castle, canoe races, tug of wars and plenty more fun for the kids and grownups.
We would like to thank Peter Redfern and Ian Tully for providing us with very enjoyable music for the night.
Then, as usual, we had fireworks off Mount Moulamein just after dark.
A big thank you to our Murray River Council for providing funds for both these events.
Bowls notes
WE travelled to Swan Hill this week to try and take out top spot.
I think some of our bowlers would get nose bleed if we got that high on the ladder.
But, that is a risk we were willing to take.
Choky became Chalky Clark. It was my job to rub the chalk off his bowls most ends.
Cool Hand Luke and his mob could not quite get over their mob, and the Happy Hookers have been renamed the Unhappy Hookers as they tried their best in the last end to even up the match.
One rink up, two down. Down by four overall.
Manangatang have the big trip this weekend to Moulamein if it is not too hot.
Football netball club
cattle gone
THE last of our cattle went to market this week.
We were very fortunate to get these one’s onto a property 18 or so months ago due to the drought.
Our club would like to thank the Shippen family for feeding these monster cattle up to the great condition that they are now in.
Also a big thank you to Mick Gray for donating his time and truck to get them to market for us.
The cattle thought this grain feeding of sheep is a great lurk.
They have bigger mouths so they can pick up more grain faster than the sheep can.
Thanks again to the Shippen family.
When it does rain, we will be looking to put a heap of cattle back out. Give it some thought.
Documentary on water
WATCH this space.
We have had a couple of visitors in Moulamein the past couple of days putting together a documentary about our water situation.
Sharon and Andre have been interviewing farmers about how the water job is affecting their farms and our district.
It is my turn tomorrow, so I will be able to get up on my soapbox and give my opinion.
Luckily, the camera man is a professional.
So, he will be able to edit out what they do not need or cannot show.
I would like to thank these two for giving up their time to try and help us in very difficult times.
They have more towns to visit in the next few days, so I wish them all the best.
River levels
THE Edward is rising very slowly at just over 2.4 metres and just above 2600 megalitres a day.
I think it will stay like this for a while to come yet.
Still plenty of small cod, as well as a few keepers getting landed.
There seems to be more cod than yellers or carp getting caught at the moment.
We must be due for a black water event again. I am sure those in charge are working on a way to stuff our rivers again.
