Football and netball still going well
THE Mighty Swans were a bit slow out of the blocks this week but managed another good win to hold their top spot.
I didn’t get to the footy on Saturday as I was busy being Pop.
When the grandchildren, the shearers and the header turned up at the same time, Pop time got reduced so I had to make up for it.
I think our seniors were our only win in the footy.
Our netball girls were a different story.
Our A Grade had their second win, B Grade won, the Under 17s had a draw and our mighty under 14s had a win.
Our mates from Hay come over the plains to do battle this week.
Come over and cheer the Mighty Swans on and have a feed out of the best canteen in the league.
Rice harvest ramping up
THE lines of trucks at our Moulamein rice sheds are starting to get a bit longer as the moisture comes down a bit and more headers can get going.
Yields seem to be down a bit but only time will tell.
We were fortunate enough to get all our rice off in one hit and our shearing is done until the mob that is on agistment comes home very soon.
Anzac Day service
I DID not get to the Anzac Day services this year.
The dawn service had a good roll-up, as well as the one at 10am.
The dawn service has been very popular for a few years now.
Well done to all those involved in organising these events.
Sculpture competition
DO not forget our gallery mob has their sculpture competition coming up on Saturday, June 10.
There is ore than $2000 prizemoney up for grabs in the two categories that are large and small.
The large must be able to be carried by two people and have a stable base.
The small sculpture must be no larger than 30cm by 50cm and be free-standing.
Sculptures may be from any materials but must be predominantly recycled materials and have a rural Australian theme.
For more information, call Joy on 0488 380 470.
I have a couple on the go.
All I have to do is get those two piles of scrap welded together to look like something.
Sounds easy.
Maybe I should have left the “s” off the crap that I will weld together.
River levels
THE Edward River is still rising at 2.15 metres and just over 2200 megalitres a day.
Our ever-reliable billabong is supplying a fair percentage of this due to rainfall upstream.
Fishing would be great if our native fish were not so well fed.
The only cod I have heard of getting caught are 20 or so kilometres upstream from Moulamein where they did not die, or with some very dedicated fishermen tossing lures all day to hope they land it on the cod’s nose.
They will still be there.
They are just not hungry, I’m sure, with the number of carp, yabbies and shrimp in our rivers at the moment.
