Force be with you: Former cop shop goes under the hammer

WHERE some of Swan Hill’s baddest criminals were locked away is “celling” up.

The former two-storey brick Swan Hill police station on Curlewis Street will go under the hammer today at a public auction.

Before today’s officers donned the royal blue uniform, the station housed 35 officers and administration personnel.

The current station, at the southern end of Swan Hill, is occupied by 75 Victoria Police members, with expanded specialist units.

Sergeant Stan Atkins was stationed at the former premises when he arrived to the regional city in 1984.

“We outgrew that place and used the state offices next door, a little residence next to the court house, and at one stage used portable offices behind the post office,” Sgt Atkins told The Guardian.

Sgt Atkins said he missed being located in the hustle and bustle of the Swan Hill Central Business District.
