The 19th Hole

MURRAY DOWNS MEN

A FIELD of about 30 players took to the course for Tuesday’s mixed Stableford competition, with the best score of the day belonging to A Grade winner Robert Hinton, who finished with a solid 37 points from his handicap of 14.

The runner-up in A Grade was John Pertzel with 36 points, while Darryl Domaille claimed the B Grade event with 33 points from his handicap of 22, with Stephen Mathews finishing second with 32 points.

The nearest the pins went to Dale Smith (5th), Darryl Domaille (11th) and John Pertzel (15th).

Thursday’s competition was also a mixed Stableford event, with Wayne Wisby claiming the A Grade division on a countback with 39 points from his handicap 13, ahead of Dale Rogers who also had 39 points.

The best score of the day belonged to B Grade winner Terry McEwan, who finished with a fantastic score of 43 points from his handicap of 22, while the runner-up in B Grade was club president Colin Hedwards with 39 points.

Murray Conn continued his hot form by taking out C Grade competition with 38 points, while Ian Gammon finished second with 36 points on a countback.

The nearest the pins were won by Gordon Parsons (2nd), Jonathan Hirst (5th), David Kennedy (11th) and Darryl Domaille (15th).

The winner of this week’s Friday nine-hole competition was Josh Gadsden with 23 points from his handicap of 20.

While the weather turned a few away for Saturday’s competition, the scoring definitely didn’t back down, with Ken Gregory finishing as the A Grade winner with a great score of 40 points from his handicap of seven, while Rosana Golf Club visitor David Kennedy finished second with 39 points.

The best score of the day belonged to B Grade winner Jason Baird, who finished with a score of 41 points from his handicap of 11, with the B Grade runner-up being Tristan Ramadge with 38 points.

Russell Silvester took out the C Grade competition with 37 points on a countback ahead of Darryl Domaille.

The nearest the pins were won by Ian Johansen (2nd), Tristan Ramadge (5th), Paul Sparks (11th) and Stuart Holt (15th), while the eagles nest on the seventh was won by Luke Merritt.

Sunday was another mixed Stableford event, with the best score on Mother’s Day belonging to A Grade winner Daniel Delmenico, who wound back the clock with an amazing score of 44 points from his handicap of 12, while the runner-up in A Grade was Coady Gorringe with 39 points.

The scoring didn’t slow down in B Grade, with emerging young gun Hugh Thompson also blitzing his division with 43 points from his handicap of 14, while Mabel Spitty finished second with 36 points.

Jake Budde claimed the honours in C Grade with 36 points on a countback ahead of Tamika Hogan.

The nearest the pins were won by John Tripodi (2nd), Timothy Free (5th) and Matthew Loats (15th).


MURRAY DOWNS LADIES

THE second round of the 2024 Ladies Club Championships was completed at Murray Downs Golf & Country Club last week.

Olive Spitty scored an uncharacteristic 80 to add to her first round of 73, to take a 10-shot lead ahead of Lynne Bishop, who has had scores of 80 and 83.

In the B Grade competition, Rhonda Barrow on 186 leads ahead of Shelley Wilkins on 189, while the C Grade leaders are Jenny Lynas (207) and Jenice Krahnert (212).

In the D Grade competition, Tamika Hogan (219) leads the field, with Kerry McDonald five shots behind.

The A Grade handicap section is being led by Mabel Spitty (138), with Olive’s younger sister three shots clear of Lynne Bishop, with Rhonda Barrow and Shelley Wilkins also leading the B Grade handicap event on 146 and 151 respectively, with Robyn Bett also on 151.

Jenny Lynas (147) and Gaye Legudi (152) are leading the way in the C Grade handicap division, with Tamika Hogan (145) and Lyn Beasy (151) in front in D Grade.

Lyn Beasy (39) took out the prize for the best score of the day on Wednesday, with Shelley Wilkins (20) also scoring 71 net the unlucky player to miss out, but was nevertheless awarded the Division 1 voucher ahead of Kristy Gordon (15) with a 72 net.

In Division 2, Jenny Lynas (30) with a score of 74 and Suzanne McLellan (25) with a 75 net score took out the prizes, while the runner-up to Lyn in division 3 was Kerry McDonald (36) with a 72 net.

Lynne Bishop (72), Val Hedwards and Robyn Bett (both 73) led the ball pool, which went down to scores of 78, while Robyn Bett hit her tee shot to within two meters of the flag on the 11th hole to win the jackpot, with Mary-Anne Davis, Georgina Douglas and Paula Pickert claiming victory in the other nearest the pins.

Maryanne Mathiske (37) with 38 points was Saturday’s winner, with the next best score belonging to Sarah Clark (19) and Ruth McAlister (25) with 36 points each.

Dione Heppell and Kerry Gammon collected the nearest the pin prizes.


LALBERT

ON Sunday, May 12, the Lalbert Golf Club held its official opening day with a par-three event being held.

In the men’s division, the scratch winner was James Meehan Jr on 59, ahead of his father Doug Meehan on 60.

The handicap winner was Dave Doolan with a net 53, with Doolan winning by countback ahead of Damian Kelly.

In the ladies section, Karen McKissack took out the scratch event with 70, ahead of Dakota Meehan on 76, while the handicap winner was Caitlin McKissack with a net 52 score ahead of Dakota Meehan with a net 54.

The junior winner was Chayse Worner on 77 ahead of Kel Parsons with 78, while the nearest the pin winner was James Meehan Jr.

At the end of the day’s play, the club awards were presented to the winners and runners-up on the day, with club president Peter Harley then presenting the NDGA Winter Pennant Medallions to James Meehan Jr and Scott Worner, who were part of the club’s winning pennant team.


LAKESIDE LADIES

ANOTHER cool start turned into perfect golf weather for the ladies who ventured out to Lakeside on Wednesday.

Unfortunately, the scores weren’t perfect, but Deanne Free (24) claimed victory on a countback ahead of Jean Youl (19) with both ladies scoring 32 points.

Mandy Male (10) lead the ball pool with 31 points, while Sue Notting (26) had 28 points.

The nearest the pins went the way of Deanne on the 3rd, while Mandy took home the Bakers Delight voucher on the 7th and was also closest on the Heil’s 12th, with Jean edging out Joan Foster to win the 18th hole.

Mandy Ackland had a gobbler on the 2nd, while Mandy Male had one on the 3rd and Jean had one on the 12th.

The Championships start on Wednesday, with the best three rounds out of four to count towards the final score.

NYAH WEST

DENNIS Pretty (11) was a runaway winner of the Monthly Medal last Sunday, scoring a gross 78, net 67 score, with John Manser finishing as runner-up with (12) a gross score of 84 and net 72.

The nearest the pins went to Dennis Pretty on the the Goodyear Autocare 2nd and the Nyah West Pharmacy 12th, while John Manser claimed the Nutrien Ag 15th and Michael Watson the Rutherford Street Tyres 16th.

The Country Tracks 4WD Swan Hill eagles nest scored yet another egg.

This Sunday, a large contingent of members will be travelling to Balranald to contest the time-honoured Bodinnar’s 4BBB tournament.

As such, the club’s junior development program will not be held this Sunday morning, but will return next week at 9.30am.

Entries are now being taken for the Graham Wealth men’s and ladies 4BBB Stableford tournament to be held on Sunday, May 26, with all entries to John Manser on 0407 311 874.

WEDNESDAY, May 8 was a stroke event, the second round of the Club Championships.

Second: Mary Robinson 116/68 (48).

Third: Lois Jordan 103/69 (34).

Wednesday, May 15 was daily competition, the final round of the Club Championships.

VETERANS

THERE was a great turnout of 40 veteran golfers at the Kerang Golf Club on Tuesday for the Grass Green Championships.

The course was in great condition, with many thanks to Joyce, Ron and Graham for your assistance in making it a great day of golf.

Michelle Dillon defended her win last year with a scratch score of 86 to win the ladies event, while Joyce Boyd won the net event with 96-26-70 on a countback ahead of Nola Robinson with 96-26-70.

In the men’s event, David Wilkinson had a great day out, scoring 75 to win the scratch event, while Kevin Lane won the net event with a score of 81-14-67.

The ball pool winners were Mandy Male (88), Nola Robinson (96), Eileen Willox (96), Col Wilkie (78), John Manser (83) and Graham Wyte and Graeme Brierley both on 86.

The nearest the pins were won by Eileen Willox and Joe Wilkinson (3rd), Di Atkin and David Wilkinson (5th), Eileen Willox and Dennis Pretty (9th), Nola Robinson and John Manser (13th) and Jean Youl and Rob Male (16th).

The next Veterans event is at Tooleybuc Golf Club on Tuesday, June 18 with lunch available in the bar or bistro.
