THE company managing the private car park outside Coles has reminded locals faded yellow markings in the car park designate a pedestrian crossing, following concerns raised by a Swan Hill resident.
The yellow zebra-style markings run directly from the pedestrian crossing on Beveridge Street (in front of the city arcade) towards the adjacent lot of car park spots, and continue from the end of the lot directly in front of the Coles building.
Swan Hill resident John Strauss raised concerns with The Guardian that he had always misunderstood the meaning of the markings as a pedestrian and assumed motorists would do the same.
When testing out his theory last week, he realised he was right — no motorist gave way to him.
“It’s an area of near-misses and one day it might not be a near-miss,” Mr Strauss said.
“If it is a pedestrian crossing, they should put up a warning to pedestrians, and secondarily to car drivers, to let them know what it is.”
